WAITAKI DISTRICT LIBRARY
MAKING LIBRARIES MORE RELEVANT
Over an 18 month period we worked with the Manager and staff on space planning that would take the library from a traditional model to a innovative modern layout including new technologies.
Inspired by the Rachel Van Reil model in the UK we reviewed customer flow, workflow and how we could create zones within the library that made it more relevant to the visitor. Breaking down the traditional model of tombstone alleys and creating areas for each subject area in Non Fiction called ‘living rooms’ that were supported by new signage and labeling.
Our aesthetic was to bring a bold and playful colour palette to the library while still utilising current furniture. Wrapping ends of shelving units in key colours, updated signage and book labelling with colourful icon designs and complemented this with upholstering furniture and new lighting in similar palettes.
